What it is
Irritation or compression of the superficial sensory branch of the radial nerve near the thumb side of the wrist. It does not cause motor weakness.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Burning, tingling or numbness over the dorsal thumb and hand
- Pain from a watch, bracelet, handcuff or local pressure
- Tenderness along the nerve course
- No associated weakness of the hand muscles

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity after trauma, a finger that cannot actively bend or straighten, progressive loss of sensation or strength, a cold or pulseless hand, an open wound, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
