What it is
A sprain or tear of the ligament between the scaphoid and lunate. It may occur acutely after a fall or gradually lead to instability and arthritis.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Dorsal or radial wrist pain after a fall
- Pain with weight-bearing, pushing or forceful grip
- Clicking, catching or a sense of instability
- Swelling and reduced grip strength

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity after trauma, a finger that cannot actively bend or straighten, progressive loss of sensation or strength, a cold or pulseless hand, an open wound, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
