What it is
Mallet finger involves the terminal extensor tendon; jersey finger is an avulsion of the flexor digitorum profundus from the distal phalanx. Early recognition is important.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Inability to actively straighten the fingertip with mallet finger
- Inability to actively bend the distal joint with jersey finger
- Pain, swelling or bruising after impact or forced pull
- Fingertip deformity and loss of function

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity after trauma, a finger that cannot actively bend or straighten, progressive loss of sensation or strength, a cold or pulseless hand, an open wound, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
