Finger dislocation and volar-plate injury

What it is

Joint displacement or injury to the volar stabiliser, most commonly at the PIP joint after hyperextension. An avulsion fracture may coexist.

Typical clinical symptoms

  • Visible deformity or pain after the finger bends backward
  • Swelling and bruising around the joint
  • Restricted flexion or extension
  • Instability, locking or numbness after trauma

Deformity after trauma, a finger that cannot actively bend or straighten, progressive loss of sensation or strength, a cold or pulseless hand, an open wound, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
