Dupuytren disease

What it is

Progressive thickening of the palmar fascia that forms nodules and cords and draws one or more fingers into flexion. It is not a tendon disorder.

Typical clinical symptoms

  • Firm nodules or cords in the palm
  • Progressive inability to place the hand flat
  • Contracture most often affecting the ring and little fingers
  • Difficulty placing the hand in a pocket, wearing gloves or gripping large objects

When is medical assessment needed?

Deformity after trauma, a finger that cannot actively bend or straighten, progressive loss of sensation or strength, a cold or pulseless hand, an open wound, and redness with fever require prompt medical assessment.
