What it is
A bone break after impact, fall, collision or forceful rotation. An open fracture or neurovascular injury is an emergency.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Severe focal pain and tenderness
- Swelling, bruising or deformity
- Inability to load or use the segment

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, immediate loss of function, disproportionate pain with a tense segment, neurological weakness, worsening symptoms after a head impact, collapse during exertion, confusion in heat and very dark urine after exercise require emergency assessment.
