What it is

A tear of fibrocartilage that stabilises and distributes load in the knee, shoulder or hip after rotation or repeated loading.

Typical clinical symptoms

  • Deep or joint-line pain
  • Clicking, catching or locking
  • Swelling and limitation with squatting, turning or throwing

Deformity or an open wound after trauma, immediate loss of function, disproportionate pain with a tense segment, neurological weakness, worsening symptoms after a head impact, collapse during exertion, confusion in heat and very dark urine after exercise require emergency assessment.
