What it is
Load-related pain along the posteromedial tibial border, commonly called shin splints; stress fracture and compartment syndrome must be distinguished.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Diffuse pain along the inner tibial border
- Pain at the start of or after running and jumping
- Tenderness over a long area rather than one focal point

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, immediate loss of function, disproportionate pain with a tense segment, neurological weakness, worsening symptoms after a head impact, collapse during exertion, confusion in heat and very dark urine after exercise require emergency assessment.
