What it is
Reduced tendon tolerance after rapid change in volume or intensity, potentially affecting the Achilles, patellar, gluteal, adductor, hamstring or shoulder tendons.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Local pain while loading the tendon
- Stiffness after rest or at activity onset
- Reduced strength, jumping, running or throwing capacity

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, immediate loss of function, disproportionate pain with a tense segment, neurological weakness, worsening symptoms after a head impact, collapse during exertion, confusion in heat and very dark urine after exercise require emergency assessment.
