What it is
A spectrum of bone injury when repeated load exceeds recovery, potentially progressing from bone oedema to a fracture line.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Gradual focal pain aggravated by activity
- Clear tenderness over bone
- Pain progressing from sport to walking or rest

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, immediate loss of function, disproportionate pain with a tense segment, neurological weakness, worsening symptoms after a head impact, collapse during exertion, confusion in heat and very dark urine after exercise require emergency assessment.
