Partial or complete tearing of a tendon such as the Achilles, patellar, quadriceps or biceps tendon after forceful contraction or trauma.
Typical clinical symptoms
- A pop and immediate pain
- Sudden loss of strength or function
- A palpable gap, swelling or bruising

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, immediate loss of function, disproportionate pain with a tense segment, neurological weakness, worsening symptoms after a head impact, collapse during exertion, confusion in heat and very dark urine after exercise require emergency assessment.
