What it is
Critical pressure rise within a muscle compartment after trauma or bleeding that threatens muscle and nerve tissue. It is a surgical emergency.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Severe pain disproportionate to the injury
- Pain on passive stretch with a tense segment
- Progressive numbness or weakness; a pulse may still be present

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, immediate loss of function, disproportionate pain with a tense segment, neurological weakness, worsening symptoms after a head impact, collapse during exertion, confusion in heat and very dark urine after exercise require emergency assessment.
