What it is
A tear of the long-head biceps tendon near the shoulder, often through a weakened tendon and sometimes together with a rotator cuff tear.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Sudden pain or a “pop” at the front of the shoulder
- Bruising extending down the upper arm
- A lower muscle bulge known as a “Popeye” deformity
- Weakness or pain with elbow flexion and turning the palm upward

Deformity after trauma, sudden inability to raise the arm, loss of sensation or pulse, a hot red shoulder with fever, or pain with chest pressure or breathing difficulty require prompt medical assessment.
