What it is
Fractures of the bones forming the shoulder girdle, usually after a fall, direct impact or high-energy trauma. They require medical assessment and imaging when indicated.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Severe pain immediately after trauma
- Swelling, bruising, deformity or focal bony tenderness
- Inability to move or use the arm
- Numbness, a cold hand or weak pulse requires emergency assessment

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity after trauma, sudden inability to raise the arm, loss of sensation or pulse, a hot red shoulder with fever, or pain with chest pressure or breathing difficulty require prompt medical assessment.
