What it is
Loss of blood supply to part of the humeral head, which may lead to bone and joint damage. It may relate to trauma, corticosteroids or other factors and requires medical assessment.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Deep shoulder pain, initially with loading and later at rest
- Stiffness and progressive loss of movement
- Night pain in later stages
- Difficulty raising the arm and completing daily activities

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity after trauma, sudden inability to raise the arm, loss of sensation or pulse, a hot red shoulder with fever, or pain with chest pressure or breathing difficulty require prompt medical assessment.
