What it is
Temporary interruption of blood supply to the femoral head in childhood, changing joint shape and function during healing.
Typical clinical symptoms
- A gradually developing limp
- Hip, thigh or knee pain
- Restricted hip rotation and abduction

When is medical guidance needed?
Trauma with deformity or inability to bear weight, a very painful hip with fever, a child or adolescent with sudden limping, progressive neurological weakness, bladder or bowel change, and unexplained pain with systemic symptoms require prompt medical assessment.
