What it is
Joint inflammation caused by rheumatological disease or infection. A very painful hip with fever or inability to bear weight is an emergency.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Marked pain and severe restriction of movement
- Prolonged stiffness, other swollen joints or systemic symptoms
- Fever, systemic illness and refusal to walk with infection

When is medical guidance needed?
Trauma with deformity or inability to bear weight, a very painful hip with fever, a child or adolescent with sudden limping, progressive neurological weakness, bladder or bowel change, and unexplained pain with systemic symptoms require prompt medical assessment.
