What it is
An umbrella term most often involving gluteal tendinopathy, with or without bursal irritation, on the outside of the hip. It is not always simply bursitis.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Lateral-hip pain and tenderness
- Pain when lying on that side or crossing the legs
- Pain with walking, stairs or single-leg stance

When is medical guidance needed?
Trauma with deformity or inability to bear weight, a very painful hip with fever, a child or adolescent with sudden limping, progressive neurological weakness, bladder or bowel change, and unexplained pain with systemic symptoms require prompt medical assessment.
