What it is
An abnormal connection between two or more hindfoot bones that may restrict movement and become symptomatic in adolescence.
Typical clinical symptoms
- A rigid flatfoot with restricted movement
- Hindfoot or ankle pain
- Recurrent sprains and activity-related fatigue

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
