What it is
Progressive dysfunction of the tendon supporting the medial arch, often forming part of progressive flatfoot deformity.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Pain and swelling behind the medial malleolus or along the arch
- Progressive arch lowering and heel deviation
- Difficulty or inability to perform a single-leg heel raise

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
