What it is
A load-related condition of the plantar fascia near its heel attachment; a heel spur is not necessarily the pain source.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Plantar-medial heel pain
- Worst pain during the first steps after sleep or rest
- Symptoms after prolonged standing, walking or running

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
