What it is
Injury to cartilage and underlying bone at the talar dome, often after an ankle sprain or fracture.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Persistent deep ankle pain after trauma
- Recurrent swelling with activity
- Clicking, catching, locking or instability

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
