What it is
Stretching or tearing of the medial ankle ligament complex after eversion or rotational trauma. Fracture or syndesmosis injury may coexist.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Medial ankle pain and swelling
- Pain with weight-bearing
- Deltoid-ligament tenderness and sometimes instability

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
