What it is
Stretching or tearing of the ligaments on the outside of the ankle, most often the ATFL and CFL, usually when the foot rolls inward.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Lateral pain, swelling and bruising
- Pain with walking or weight-bearing
- Ligament tenderness and sometimes a sense of instability

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
