What it is
Irritation or reduced cushioning capacity of the tissue beneath the calcaneus, often from repeated impact or pressure.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Deep pain in the centre of the heel
- Greater pain barefoot or on hard surfaces
- A bruised feeling during standing and walking

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
