What it is
Irritation of the heel growth plate in active children and adolescents; it is not an adult tendon disorder.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Heel pain with running and jumping
- Tenderness when the calcaneus is squeezed from the sides
- Limping or toe walking after activity

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
