What it is
Irritation of the tendon at the front of the ankle and top of the foot, often related to hills, running or shoe pressure.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Anterior ankle or medial-foot pain
- Pain while lifting the foot or walking uphill
- Tenderness and sometimes swelling along the tendon

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
