What it is
Compression of soft tissue or bone at end range: anteriorly in dorsiflexion or posteriorly in plantarflexion.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Anterior pain with squatting, descending stairs or sprinting
- Posterior pain during pointe, kicking or landing
- Restricted movement and sometimes swelling or locking

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
