What it is
A fracture of the lateral, medial and/or posterior malleolus, often with ligament injury. Joint alignment and stability determine urgency.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Pain, swelling and bruising after trauma
- Inability or major difficulty bearing weight
- Deformity, an open wound or circulation change requires emergency care

When is medical assessment needed?
Deformity or an open wound after trauma, inability to bear weight, a cold or pulseless foot, progressive numbness or weakness, a red hot joint with fever, and a neuropathic foot that becomes suddenly hot and swollen require prompt medical assessment.
