What it is

After cervical decompression or fusion, the wound, swallowing, neurological function and gradual return of neck and arm use are monitored.

Typical clinical symptoms

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Temporary swallowing difficulty after an anterior approach
  • Residual arm numbness or weakness requiring monitoring

After Surgery

When should the medical team be contacted?

Fever or wound discharge, wound opening, new one-sided leg swelling, difficulty breathing, chest pain, a cold limb, progressive weakness, deformity or sudden loss of function require immediate contact with the medical team or emergency services.
