What it is
Repair or reconstruction of the lateral ligaments or syndesmosis is protected early, followed by movement, strength, balance and direction change.
Typical clinical symptoms
- Ankle pain and swelling
- Stiffness and lack of confidence during loading
- Weak stabilising muscles and single-leg control

When should the medical team be contacted?
Fever or wound discharge, wound opening, new one-sided leg swelling, difficulty breathing, chest pain, a cold limb, progressive weakness, deformity or sudden loss of function require immediate contact with the medical team or emergency services.
